Old memories

To Wanda Orton:

I believe in one of your articles you mentioned your husband “Coach Skeeter.” I actually grew up in Lakewood and played YMCA football for the Yellow Jackets, which your husband coached in the 1950s.

I was going to try out for Little League Baseball but broke my ankle eaving Travis jumping a ditch on the way home the day before try-outs. I wanted desparately to play for the “Cubs.” I can still remember the encouragement from your husband by him saying, “Come on, Biggun.”

Tell him I said hello and I still think on those days playing football for him often. Also, tell Clem hello for me. He lived one street over.
