Students have the scoop in business

Students looking for scholarships to attend Lee College, as a business major should check Dr. Gregg Lattier’s campus ice cream stand.

The business administration and management professor for the college, armed with a loan from the student government association, opened a Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream franchise on campus. The franchise is used as a learning tool for business majors, as well as to garner profits to use for scholarships.

“I searched quite a bit for a franchise before selecting Dreyer’s,” Lattier said. “They (franchises) are usually expensive.”

The ice cream company worked with the professor towards the cause and gave the group many of their supplies on consignment.

“Their help saved us a lot of money,” Lattier said. “We wouldn’t be able to afford it without them.”

The ice cream stand has been in operation for one year and has had much support from students and faculty members. Students work the stand as their class schedule permits as part of their grade in Dr. Lattier’s class. The prices are modest too; $1.50 for a single scoop and $2.25 for a double scoop. The students learn to scoop ice cream, but what Lattier hopes they take away from the experience is the ability to fill out a financial statement.

“I generally only help with washing dishes,” Lattier said. “The whole point is for the students to intimately understand the inner workings of the day-to-day running of a business.”

Scholarships from the business are allocated at the end of each spring semester at Honors Day, a celebration for students who have outstanding achievement’s in one or more areas, at which certificates and scholarships are awarded.

“We have already received $1,000 in profits,” Lattier said.

Dr. Lattier’s adventures in entrepreneurship do not stop with ice. Next week, the professor plans to open a coffee bar in ATC building of the college called Books and Beans.

“We will sell fresh-brewed coffee and iced coffee,” Lattier said. “We will also carry used books.”

Proceeds from book sales will go to the Lee College Library for the purchase of new books.
