On Oct. 2, while driving to work, I suffered a major heart attack. Upon arriving at my office, my boss and a friend called 911. The EMTs were at the Baytown Sun about 2 minutes after the call. After re-starting my heart, they immediately transported me to San Jacinto Methodist Hospital. If it were not for their promptness and kind, caring treatment that I received, I might not have made it.
I just wanted to thank the 911 system in Baytown for saving my life. Also, I wanted the people of Baytown to know what a treasure they have in the 911 system.
A few years ago, I attended a funeral that took the procession through one of our neighboring communities. I was appalled by the behavior of the other drivers. No one would pull over as is customary when a funeral procession passes by. Some people even tried to slip into the procession.
On Monday I attended a funeral in Baytown. Everyone in the oncoming lanes pulled over out of respect and waited patiently as the last car of the procession passed by.
Say what you want about Baytown. Maybe we’re not the most affluent community around. Maybe we don’t have the fanciest stores and restaurants, but we still remember how to show respect for the dead. I think that says more for our little town than all the stores and restaurants put together.
