In the now

I just got back to Kansas City, Missouri from a weeklong road trip to Texas. As a seventh generation Texan, I wanted to go back to my roots and get my "Texas fix."

I was born at San Jacinto Hospital on October 4, 1963. My, how Baytown’s grown since then! I drove by my grandfather's barber shop on Bayway drive. I actually went inside my old house on Dent Drive and Main street. I photographed the Texas Avenue Oak, Trophy Barber Shop, Anderson's Western Wear to show my kids a part of my past.

I then took the Lynchburg Ferry to the San Jacinto battleground where I toured the Monument museum. I walked under the very tree where Santa Anna camped, and saw the spot where Sam Houston was wounded in battle, things I never saw growing up in Baytown.

I guess you don't really appreciate where you came from until you're gone.

If you get the time today, stop and look around, Baytown. Enjoy the "Now." It may not be there tomorrow.
