DAYTON -- There was a playoff atmosphere under the Friday night lights in Dayton as the Broncos took on Barbers Hill.
Dayton, rallying from a 7-3 halftime deficit with 21 unanswered points, managed to overcome the void left by injured quarterback Payton Ploch.
His replacement, sophomore Andres Herrera, stepped up and led his team to a close 24-21 victory over The Hill.
He looked spectacular in his first start as he completed 15 of his 21 passes for 147 yards.
His favorite target Friday was Armando Reyes as he caught seven passes for 68 yards.
BH head coach Don Price was impressed with Herrera.
“They had such an explosive offense and he represented his school very well.”
The Eagles showed they had an explosive offense of their own, battling back after entering the final quarter behind 24-7 to score twice in the final 12 minutes and make a game of it at the end.
Barbers Hill opened the fourth quarter with a 27-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Viverette to Carter Smith.
The Eagles put another score on the board with 30 seconds to go on a pass from Viverette to Cade McDonald.
The onside kick attempt failed however and the Eagles came up short.
“Our guys gave a proud effort,” Price said. “We had our chances and now we just have to move on. It doesn’t get any easier next week either.”
District 19-4A leader Crosby is up next for the Eagles, coming to Eagle Stadium next Friday.
Dayton improved to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in 19-4A. Barbers Hill is now 4-4, 3-2.
The Eagles were expecting a run game from Dayton because of Ploch’s absence and they got one at the hands of Xavier Baldwin. He rushed for 133 yards on 18 attempts and had two touchdowns.
The third quarter was dominated by Dayton and it began with a 5-yard touchdown run from Xavier Frank.
Baldwin got his two touchdown runs in the third quarter within a span of four minutes.
His first one was from seven yards, and with a minute to go in the quarter he ripped a 53-yard touchdown run to give the Broncos a three-score lead, 24-7.
Early on, it appeared that the Broncos offense would be in for another long night as their only points in the first half came with nine seconds to go on a 30-yard field goal by Juan Carranco.
Barbers Hill didn’t do much better. The Eagles did manage to get into the end zone once before the half on a one-yard touchdown run from Viverette.
This made it a mere 7-3 at half.
Barbers Hill was pass heavy in the second half mainly due to the early injury of running back Andrew McMillan. After the injury the Eagles never seemed to be able to gain anything on the ground.
The Broncos defense held the Hill to only 85 rushing yards on 33 carries.
Dayton will hit the road to take on Galena Park next Friday.
