Two teams bent on redemption will meet at Bronco Stadium tonight at 7 p.m. and second place in District 21-5A could be on the line.
But mostly, Barbers Hill and Dayton just want to get back on the winning track.
Barbers Hill lost 39-21 to Goose Creek Memorial last week while Dayton was upset 28-0 by Crosby.
It was the first District 19-4A losses for both teams, each 3-1 and now trailing 4-0 Crosby.
“We fumbled about six times all within our 30-yard line,” Dayton coach Jerry Stewart said Thursday. “That lost us about 24 snaps.
“I don’t know if I’ve ever been around a team that dropped the football that much. But that’s part of football. We never could get anything going and they (Crosby) did.”
The Broncos, state runnersup a year ago, lost more than fumbles in the game. They lost quarterback Payton Ploch, their team offensive leader, to a second-half concussion.
Stewart said Ploch will not play tonight. Instead, he’ll start junior varsity quarterback Andreas Herrera, the coach said, because his varsity backup QB is also injured.
But expect no tears from Barbers Hill coach Don Price.
He said he has had six starters injured and ruled out for the season so far this year.
“If the Dallas Cowboys lose six starters, they’re not going to be very good,” said Price, his team 4-3 overall. “But we don’t use that as an excuse,” Price said. “We just move up the next best player.”
Price said Dayton and Barbers Hill had a lot in common playing in last week’s rainy weather.
“They did like we did, they turned the ball over. We threw an interception in the end zone, fumbled it around our 30-yard line on time, fumbled on a kickoff return another,” he said. “None of them were good.
“To beat Dayton, we’ll have to play real sound football and not turn it over. We can’t give up big plays. They’ve got a good ballclub, and they’ve got a lot of other weapons besides Ploch.”
Dayton’s Stewart said he’s looking forward to tonight.
“They’re fun to play,” he said of the Eagles. “They’re going to play you to the max. They didn’t just start playing. They’ve been playing a long time at The Hill.”
