On Saturday, the Pilot Club of Baytown will host the 11th annual Memory Walk to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association of Houston and Southeast Texas, which provides services to Alzheimer’s patients and their caregivers in Harris County and surrounding counties. Participants raise money for the walk — many of them in honor of lost loved ones.

Individuals and small business and corporate teams will walk from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Bayland Park. Walkers ask friends, family, business associates and others to sponsor them by making a donation to the Alzheimer’s Association. Others volunteer their time to register walkers, man checkpoints and offer refreshments.

Despite growing participation each year, more walkers are still needed.

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain disorder that gradually destroys a person’s memory and ability to learn, reason, make judgments, communicate and carry out daily activities. As Alzheimer’s progresses, individuals may also experience changes in personality and behavior, such as anxiety, suspiciousness or agitation, as well as delusions or hallucinations. Although there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s, new treatments are on the horizon as a result of accelerating insight into the biology of the disease.

Once considered a rare disease, research has shown Alzheimer’s to be the leading cause of dementia.

Today, finding a family that hasn’t been touched by the disease is nearly impossible. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, an estimated 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease, more than doubling since 1980. One in 10 people over 65 and nearly half of those over 85 have Alzheimer’s, and 1 in 3 knew someone with the disease.

By 2050, the number of individuals with Alzheimer’s could range from 11.3 million to 16 million.

Individuals may register for the walk with a $15 donation. Walking teams may be formed with a $15 donation for each team member.

Memory Walk takes place in hundreds of communities nationwide; millions of men, women and children will participate as walkers, volunteers and sponsors this year.

By participating, you will be doing good for a lot of people. We hope to see you there.
