The Lee College theater program is planning on carving out their proscenium stage debut with Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd.”

“This (Sweeney Todd) will be a great show for the new theater,” Amanda Murray, head of the Lee theater department and director, said. “Its going to be outstanding.”

The British urban legend turned Tony award-winning musical in 1979 by Stephen Sondheim is a Victorian melodrama that surrounds a barber in London, who is bent on exacting revenge on society for destroying his family.

His method of madness? A shiny straight razor.

Joining the cast from the Lee theater department for this production are professional musicians from the Houston area and abroad.

“This show is a great operatic piece,” Jeff Goble, playing the role of Sweeney Todd, said. “It has a great revenge plot.”

Goble is recent graduate from the Moores School of Music graduate program at the University of Houston. While attending the university Goble had 9 leading roles, including Tom Joad in the musical version of “Grapes of Wrath.”

The orchestra, dubbed the “Sweeney Orchestra” by Murray, was assembled by Ken Booker, head of the Lee College music department, and includes all professional musicians from as far as Louisiana.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for the students to work with professionals,” Murray said. “We are very lucky to be working with everyone.”

Fight Coordinator Alan Hutton- or “Murder Tech” as he prefers to be called- is also one of the many professionals working on this production.

“My job is to create the illusion of violence without getting anyone hurt,” Hutton said. “Violence can move the story like dialogue, setting the dynamic between characters.”

Hutton has 25 years of industry experience and is one of two fight choreographers at The Texas Renaissance Festival.

Sweeney Todd will open the weekend of Oct. 22 and closes Oct.31.
