HUMBLE So much for maybe losing a step.
The Dayton Broncos opened District 19-4A play Saturday night with a 48-12 domination of a 2-1 Kingwood Park team with quarterback Payton Ploch running for three touchdowns and passing for a fourth.
Dayton, now 2-1, will host 3-1 Goose Creek Memorial Friday night.
Winners of a combined 25 games in the 2007 and 2008 seasons, the Broncos made do with 314 total yards of offense 238 on the ground and 200 total yards from Ploch (124 rushing, 76 passing).
But they also got an 88-yard punt return touchdown from Xavier Baldwin.
And a Dayton defense led by Aaron Jenkins, Darrian Wright and Chris Young held Kingwood Park to six first downs and 114 total yards.
Running back Chris Smith led the Panthers with 60 yards rushing on 11 carries and Adrian Quintero added 51 yards on 21 carries. KWP quarterback Zach Vorenkamp completed just 1 of 9 passes for 14 yards and was intercepted twice.
It was a strange game that featured only three first-half first downs and a 21-9 halftime lead by the Broncos, Class 4A Division II runnersup last year.
The Broncos gained only three first downs in the first half but that was one for each of their touchdowns.
Their defense didn’t allow a first-half first down and only 13 total yards to the Panthers, who still managed to score twice.
One of several outstanding punts by Kingwood Park’s Kyle Trimm backed Dayton up to its 6-yard line late in the first half and the Panthers sacked Ploch for a safety, cutting Dayton’s 14-0 early lead to 14-9.
But the Panthers couldn’t take advantage of the free kick that gave them the ball right back and Baldwin fielded Trimm’s 46-yard punt and returned it 88 yards to give Dayton a 21-9 halftime lead.
The Broncos opened the second half with a seven-play, 80-yard drive capped by Ploch’s cutback 25-yard touchdown run.
And Dayton needed only two plays to score the next time it touched the ball, which came after Frank’s 34-yard punt return.
Ploch got all 35 necessary yards in two tries, running 34 yards on the first snap and getting the final yard on the next.
The Panthers answered with a drive of nearly five minutes and 11 plays, but had to settle for Trimm’s 34-yard field goal to cut Dayton’s lead to 34-12 with 3:30 left in the third quarter.
The Bronco response was an eight-play, 80-yard drive of its own, with Frank scoring from 20 yards on a Ploch screen pass to make it 41-12 at the end of three periods.
Baldwin, Dayton’s backup quarterback, scored his team’s final touchdown on a 12-yard run with 1:09 remaining after a Robert Edwards interception.
Frank’s interception on the game’s third play set up the game’s first score, a two-yard run by Ploch that capped a six-play, 29-yard drive.
Another big special teams play, a dropped punt snap by Trimm left Dayton only 27 yards to go for its second score. Jakari Delasbour ran 22 yards to make it 14-0 with 1:12 left in the first quarter.
Kingwood Park got on the board early in the second quarter after Frank fumbled Trimm’s 53-yard punt and Dylan Green recovered for the Panthers on the Dayton 10.
After a five-yard penalty, Vorenkamp passed 13 yards to Matt Camp for a touchdown with 10:11 left in the first half.
