HOUSTON -- Although Barbers Hill and Galena Park have met only a few times, these two storied football programs are starting to develop quite a rivalry and Friday night at GPISD Stadium the Eagles chalked up another win over the Yellow Jackets as they opened District 19-4A play with an impressive 33-20 victory.

The Eagles started slow, but finished fast.

"We knew it would be a battle and we knew that emotions would be high," said BH coach Don Price.

Jacket QB Byron Smith opened the scoring on a five yard keeper, after Desmond Smith dashed 35 yards on the fake on fourth and two.

"Galena Park made a big play on the fake punt and then we settled down," said Price.

The lapse on defense sort of brought the offense to life to start the second quarter.

QB Matthew Viverette and RB Andrew McMillian the let their line show them the way. With Chris Fechner, Tyler Gobert, Jeremy Neff and Garrett Payne throwing key blocks the Eagles were able to wear down Galena Park.

Viverette, who finished with 139 yards rushing and 84 passing, brought the Eagles to within one on a perfect eight yard TD toss to Jesse Morton. A bad snap on the conversion try left the score a 7-6 with 6:28 showing in the first half.

After forcing punt on a three and out, Viverette turned to McMillian to give the Eagles a 12-7 margin before the half. McMillian on a seven yard dive play closed a quick 50 yard, 6 play drive.

The Eagles offense and defense played much better in closing half after the sluggish start.

"Galena Park has such good athletes and we have a few young players that have not played on Friday night," said Price.

"We were able to force (Byron) Smith to throw more than they like to. (Azee) Caldwell, (Ricardo) Cavazos, (Kade) Bradford and (Chris) Frazier picked up the pressure that forced those late interceptions," Price said.

Viverette opened the scoring in the third stanza with another touchdown pass to Morton, who beat man coverage. The pass covered 35 yards and gave Eagles a 19-10 cushion at the 6:21.

On the first play after the ensuing kick, the Eagles defense got into the scoring when sophomore Logan McSwain pounced on the GP fumble in the end zone.

The Eagles defense claimed seven turnovers. Perry Robinson and Mitchell Hopper both had a pair of interceptions while, McSwain, James Bellard and Randall Adlong registered fumble recoveries.

Viverette led all rushers with 139 on 32 carries and finished with 84 passing on a 7 of 19 evening.

Smith paced Galena Park with 270 passing and TD rushing and passing.
