A 23-year-old Houston man narrowly escaped death when a bullet fired at him while he drove on Interstate 10 Wednesday morning almost struck his carotid artery.

The shooting occurred about 7:30 a.m., according to Sgt. M. Alvarado of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

The victim was heading eastbound on I-10 when another vehicle pulled up next to him and the driver shot him through the victim’s vehicle window, Alvarado explained.

The bullet stuck the victim in the neck but he was able to continue driving. He exited the freeway and followed Spur 330 into Baytown until he got to the Rollingbrook intersection. There he pulled over to seek help.

Baytown police, firefighters and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene.

“He was conscious and talking but his injury was so close to the carotid artery that the EMS decided to call Life Flight for him,” said Alvarado. “He was taken to Houston and is now in stable condition.”

The victim said his assailant was a Hispanic male in a dark green, late model vehicle, either a Chevy Tahoe or a GMC Yukon, according to Alvarado.

Anyone who was on Interstate 10 Wednesday mornings and saw anything that might be related to the shooting, or anyone with information about the shooting or the shooter from any other source, should call Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS, Alvarado said.

Crime Stoppers pays cash rewards for information that leads to the arrest and charging of anyone who commits a felony. Callers can remain anonymous, even if collecting a reward.
