LEAGUE CITY — The Clear Creek Wildcats celebrated their homecoming by beating the Baytown Ganders 17-7 Friday night.

The Wildcats were in top form on defense, as they forced four Gander turnovers in the first half, and seven for the whole game.

“We didn’t make the plays we needed to when we needed to,” Gander coach Marvin Sedberry said. “We had our chances, but we didn’t come through when needed.”

The main chance Sedberry was talking about came late in the fourth quarter when the Ganders trailed 14-7. They had the ball on the 13-yard line with fourth and inches ahead of them.

But a fumbled snap by quarterback Malcom Ruben ended the drive for the Ganders.

The defense then looked like it would stop the Wildcats on the next drive, but on third-and-11 from the 12-yard line, Wildcat quarterback Jarryd Garza threw a 73-yard bomb to Brent Comardelle to put the Wildcats into field goal range.

Garza ended the game going 10 for 23 with 235 yards passing and two touchdowns and four rushes for 17 yards.

The Wildcats’ Tevin Jones was the game’s top scorer with four receptions for 90 yards and two touchdowns.

“They had some good plays that they executed on us,” Sedberry said. “We had the chance to make plays on them, but our experience isn’t all there yet.

“This was their third game, and our second, so we are still learning.”

The Ganders’ offense only scored once, but it was a good pass from Ruben to Christian Gutierrez for 27 yards at the 0:54 second mark in the third quarter.

All in all, Ruben finished the game going 15 for 34 with 165 yards and one touchdown.

Dandrick Jackson had a good game for the Ganders, carring the ball 24 times for 132 yards, but just couldn’t find the end zone.

“Well, we did do good at rushing at times,” Sedberry said. “The problem was, we would get ourselves into deep yardage on some series, which forced us to have to try to make some big plays in the air.

“But that is just something we will need to work on as a team. We need to cut the mistakes down and make plays when called upon”

The Ganders have now fallen to 1-1 on 2009 season. They will look to improve on the season next Friday when they travel to Rosenberg to play Terry High at 7 p.m.
