A 25-year-old Baytown man suffered serious burns Wednesday when fumes from a generator he was working on ignited.
BFD Battalion Chief Richard Lopez said the man was working on that generator inside the garage of his home in the 700 block of West James about 10:45 p.m. when the fumes somehow ignited, causing a flash fire.
The victim suffered burns on his face, hands, arms and legs, Lopez said. Some plastic boxes and containers in the garage caught fire, but someone at the scene put it out.
“I don’t know if that was a family member or a neighbor but somebody there put it out,” Lopez said.
A Life Flight helicopter was called in to transport the man to a Houston hospital. Lopez said the fire department’s report showed the victim suffered second-degree burns, but added that information was only a preliminary, on-scene evaluation of the injuries.
Lopez said anyone who works on or uses generators or any other gasoline-powered equipment should pay attention to what happened Wednesday night.
“People should not work on any gasoline motor inside an enclosed area, especially a garage,” he warned. “There are too many possible sources of ignition.”
Lopez also took the opportunity to ask that people be reminded to never run a generator in an enclosed area, either.
