Two-thirds through the second week of high school football play, Baytown’s most successful team a year ago, Sterling, was the only one without a win.
But the Rangers took care of that Saturday night, downing South Houston 20-15 after last week’s game against La Porte was wiped out by lightning.
Robert E. Lee made its 2009 debut a 27-14 success Friday.
The Ganders, operating with a virtually complete new lineup under new head coach Marvin Sedberry, Jr., took the win over La Porte at Stallworth Stadium by outscoring the visiting Bulldogs two touchdowns to none in the second half.
Senior running back Dandrick Jackson and sophomore wide receiver Jaevon Richardson each scored two touchdowns for Lee, with Richardson’s two TD catches coming on passes by junior quarterback Malcolm Ruben.
Goose Creek Memorial found itself in a deep hole against Pearland Dawson Thursday night but rallied from a 34-point deficit early in the third quarter to fall to the Eagles 40-26.
Quarterback Cody Larson threw for four touchdown passes, three to fellow senior Keithen Collins, as Memorial fell to 1-1 on the season.
Baytown Christian Academy battled Houston’s Sanchez Charter in a Saturday afternoon game.
Anahuac was the only area team to claim a Thursday or Friday win.
Quarterback Cody Johnson and receiver Braxton Mayes hooked up for three touchdown passes and Dewan Childress rushed for 153 yards and two scores as the Panthers downed Danbury 41-9 to improve to 1-1.
Barbers Hill and Crosby both fell to 0-2.
The difference is Barbers Hill’s two losses have come by a combined seven points after Lumberton beat the Eagles 35-29 Friday night. Crosby has been outscored by a collective 99-23 this season, including Friday night’s 37-7 loss at Port Neches-Groves.
Friendswood knocked Dayton from the unbeaten ranks with a 36-33 win over the Broncos Friday.
Payton Ploch passed for two touchdowns and ran for a third and Jakari Delasbour ran for two more for Dayton, but Friendswood got three touchdown passes from Peter Maetzold and two touchdowns by Andrew Cole.
Several area teams will be open next week.
Goose Creek Memorial will play at Bellaire Episcopal and Lee will be at Clear Creek Friday while Sterling will return to Pasadena to take on Sam Rayburn next Saturday.
Barbers Hill will play at Cypress Ranch and Anahuac will visit Concordia Lutheran, both on Friday.
