Mayes, Childress lead Panthers by Danbury

ANAHUAC – Receiver Braxton Mayes caught only three passes Friday night, but they all went for touchdowns as the Anahuac Panthers blasted Danbury 41-9 for their first win of the year.

Running back Dewan Childress ran for 153 yards and two touchdowns for the 1-1 Panthers in their home debut.

With Justin Albritton scoring on a 12-yard run and Mayes hauling in TD passes of 59 and nine yards from quarterback Cody Johnson, Anahuac led 21-0 before Danbury got on the board midway through the second quarter on a six-yard run by Dakota Sebesta.

Childress notched his first TD run, from 13 yards, to put the Panthers up 28-7 at halftime.

In the second half, Mayes and Johnson hooked up for a 15-yard score in the third period and Childress ran 14 yards for another six points in the final period before Danbury got a safety on a bad Panther punt snap with 5:13 remaining.

Johnson completed 4 of 7 passes for 94 yards and three TDs, throwing one interception.

The Panthers travel to play Concordia Lutheran next Friday at 7:30 p.m.
