APPLE SPRINGS – Back-to-back onsides kicks by the home team to start the second half led to 32 unanswered points and a 56-8 loss by Baytown Christian in its season opener.

Apple Springs, a school near Lufkin playing six-man football for the sixth season after dropping down from UIL Class A exploded after halftime so that the 45-point mercy rule was invoked in the third quarter, ending the game.

BCA, playing its second six-man game, got a 60-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion kick by Sam Peacock in the season opener for both teams.

Apple Springs, with 26 players suited up compared to 14 for BCA, led 24-8 at the half.

“We had a good two quarters and then it got a little bit out of hand,” Bulldogs coach Donald Houser said. “Those two onsides kicks just took the wind out of our sails.”

The Bulldogs lineup was bolstered earlier this week by the addition of five players who joined the team with the start of school Monday.

“We had some newcomers show some promise,” Houser said, praising halfback Caleb Harp and brothers Joseph and Christian Domingeaux, who both played receiver and defensive back.

“We added five guys this week, so we’re a brand new team for the most part,” the coach said. “It’s going to take some time to mesh. But we did get more athletic. The guys did play well for two quarters.”
