HOUSTON – Entering Friday’s season opening game at Kinkaid, Anahuac head coach Darrell Barbay was concerned about his team’s depth and turnovers. Both proved to be the Panthers undoing in a 20-8 loss to the Falcons at Barnhart Field.

The game was delayed for more than an hour because of lightning that appeared just before halftime.

“We have to play smarter than that,” Barbay said, after watching his team lose Friday night. “I thought we did some things well, but we’re just not good enough to win when we turn the ball over like that.”

Quarterback Cody Johnson threw a pair of interceptions, one of which was returned for a score, and running back Justin Albritton coughed up a fumble.

The Panthers scored first, then watched as Kinkaid signal-called John Ed McGee directed the Falcons to a pair of touchdowns.

“We knew what kind of runner he was,” Barbay said. “He is quick and elusive and he’s just a really good athlete. He’s a Division I baseball prospect.”

McGee scored on a 28 yard run in the second quarter and finished with 71 yards on 11 carries and he directed the Kinkaid offense on scoring drives of 5:23 and 6:05.

Dewan Childress finished with 21 carries for 120 yards for Anahuac.

“I thought our guys played hard,” Barbay said. “But our defense missed some tackles and was on the field for a long time. We really don’t have the depth for something like that.”

The Falcons increased their lead to 20-6 on a one-yard run by Harlin Lawal with 39 seconds left in the third quarter. Anahuac’s only second half score was a fourth quarter safety.

Johnson drove the Panthers 79 yards in nine plays with Albritton scoring on a one-yard run. The PAT failed and Anahuac grabbed a 6-0 lead with 4:08 left in the first.

The lead was short-lived. McGee drove the Falcons into Panther territory before scoring on a 28-yard scamper. Thomas Deskin added the PAT that gave Kinkaid a 7-6 lead with 10:40 left before half.

On Anahuac’s next possession, Ben Atnipp stepped in front of a Johnson pass intended for Childress and raced 32 yards into the end zone with 8:03 left in the half.

Anahuac drove deep into Falcon territory but Childress was stopped on fourth down at the 7-yard line and Kinkaid ran out the clock to end the half with the Falcons holding a 14-6 lead.
