PASADENA -- The Goose Creek Memorial Patriots game with Pasadena Friday night was cancelled at half because of lightning in the area.

But the Pats got half of the game in, and got their confidence boosted for the season ahead.

The scoreboard read 29-0 in favor of the Patriots with 2:22 left in the half when lightning struck, and the offense was running all over the Eagles.

Cody Larson opened the game going 6 for 8 passing for 63 yards, but capped off the drive with a 10-yard touchdown run on first and goal with 9:42 remaining in the first quarter.

“I thought Cody preformed well tonight,” head coach Bret Boyd said. “I told him to come out passing a little just to feel it out, and once he got in a groove, his legs came under him.

“It was just a matter of seeing what they were throwing at us, and executing the right plays to beat their plays.”

The Patriots continued to run all over the Eagles in the next possession as De Martie Allen only took one play to score the second touchdown of the game on a 35-yard touchdown run with 7:30 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

“De Martie has great great vision,” Boyd said. “He can turn a play that looks like nothing into a long touchdown run.

“Most guys run into the pile with their head down, but De Martie runs near the pile, and then makes the correct cut to get extra yards.”

On the third drive of the game, the Patriots were in a complete rhythm as they marched down the field 54 yards on seven plays scoring a touchdown off of a Larson 24 yard quarterback draw.

As the kicking team lined up for the point after on the third touchdown, the snap was hiked over Patrick Wood’s hands.

But the Patriots were so far ahead on momentum, that Wood picked up the ball on the ten and scampered past two defenders on the one to pick up a two point conversion.

“I was very pleased with the overall effort of my team tonight,” Boyd said. “We were clicking on all cylinders, and it really showed when we executed some plays that we shouldn’t have.”

Up until half way through the second quarter, the Patriots defense had not given up a first down.

But a third down scramble by Eagles quarterback Hector Davila gave his team their first first down of the game.

“I was very pleased with the defense tonight,” Boyd said. “You know up until a certain point, we hadn’t given up a first down.

“And even when we did, I was pleased with our effort.

“We should have had some interceptions that we dropped, but that will be fixed as we move on through the season.”

The other touchdown for the Patriots was scored at the 10:31 mark in the second quarter by Allen.

The signifance of the touchdown was that Allen got the ball on a pitch to the left, fumbled the ball and picked it back up, and then ran all the way to the right of the field to score the touchdown.

All in all, Larson ended the game going nine of seventeen passing with 90 yards, and three rushes for 34 yards and two touchdowns.

Allen on the other hand, ended up with five rushes for 77 yard and two touchdowns.

“Again my team did really well,” Boyd said. “The one thing I am disappointed in is that we didn’t see our stamina.”

The Patriots, now 1-0 on the season, will look to play their first full game next Thursday when they host Pearland Dawson at Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m.

“Weather or not we could last four quarters at that pace will be determined when we get a full game in,” Boyd said. “I guess that will be determined when we roll around next week.”
