Jet Skis, WaveRunners, Seadoos.
They will all be running laps and spraying rooster tails in the lake at Gene’s Power Sports, 12525 Interstate 10, today and Sunday as part of the R5WaterXRacing Tour.
The event, which is a qualifier for the U.S. Nationals in Nashville in two weeks, was moved to Baytown at the last minute because the lake where it had been scheduled in Stillwater, Okla., banned personal water crafts.
“So we had to come to Gene’s,” said Brian Smith, event organizer. “Gene’s is where racing in Texas pretty much started, so this is basically like our home.
“We love coming to race here, because it’s so awesome.”
Because of the switch, Smith said he didn’t know how many pro racers to expect, but that the number could be from 20 to as many as 80, most from Texas but some hailing from as far as Florida and California.
Races are set to run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. There will be closed course racing and slalom racing as well as an hour-long endurance race each day.
Beginners are encouraged to race, with a junior division starting at 10 years of age. There is no entry fee for beginners. Smith said all that’s needed is a PWC and a helmet.
This is the Region 5 finals, an area that includes Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and New Mexico. The races will be broadcast live on liquidspeedradio.com , Smith said.
