A curtain call too soon?

Reports indicate that ticket sales for the Baytown Little Theater’s “Beauty and the Beast” have exceeded those of any other shows by far in the organization’s history. Reports have also stated that tickets for the remaining shows tonight, Saturday and Sunday are almost completely sold out. And, curiously, there are also reports that these tickets are selling for $75 apiece in private transactions.
Obviously, this show has affected Baytown and the surrounding area in a way never seen in the area. The buzz continues to infiltrate all aspects of our city, and the limited number of shows — six total — have certainly created even more desire to get those tickets, and get them quickly.
The question is, if such productions continue in this city, how can demand such as this be met?
As of now, there is no way for the run of this show to be extended. While Lee College has graciously provided the use of their Performing Arts Center through the rehearsal process and the performances, there are literally hundreds of residents and area citizens who continue to clamor for the chance to see the show. Would that there was another weekend of performances, perhaps those disheartened folks would have the opportunity.
This production is, without a doubt, the biggest cultural event in the history of this city. More than that, it has generated interest and praise for both the Baytown Little Theater and Lee College. Everyone involved has benefited from this show; what steps can be taken to ensure the same level of success for other summer shows, should they be allowed to continue on the same scale?
Barring a miracle, Sunday will be the final curtain call for “Beauty and the Beast.” It is our sincerest hope that this tradition of community togetherness and cultural excellence continue. More so, we hope that more time can be committed to such events, so that all who desire to take part will have the opportunity.
