Happy Birthday America!

Today is our nation’s 233rd birthday. On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was adopted by the Continental Congress, when our founding fathers pledged their “lives, fortunes and sacred honor” to defeat tyranny.
And like many other holidays throughout the year, today is a time for Americans to celebrate. In Baytown, like many other cities across the nation, we’ll have a parade, a festival, food and crafts, music, and of course, fireworks.
Others might mark the occasion by going to the beach or lake or having a backyard barbecue and enjoying the company of friends and family.
But whatever you do, don’t forget why this holiday is so important. It celebrates our freedom, our way of life, our liberty.
It was a struggle in the beginning, but America was eventually able to secure its independence. But it hasn’t been an easy road. There have been many battles along the way, including two of biggest in World War I and World War II. Americans joined forces with the free nations in Europe and Asia, and for more than 40 years, this country fought in the Cold War against communism.
And even today, our freedom is being challenged, and we will continue to defend it. In a weekly column by Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, she points out that the enemies who attacked us on Sept. 11, 2001 have no respect for human life or freedom.
They have vowed to subjugate the world to their fundamentalism and to establish a global theocracy based on their extreme and corrupted version of Islam, the senator wrote. She added, and we wholeheartedly agree, that we cannot allow them to succeed.
Our servicemen and women are fighting in Iraq, Afghanistan and around the world to help keep terrorists from attacking America. We salute all of them for continuing to fight for what our country sought 231 years ago — freedom.
We urge everyone to enjoy the holiday. Take in the activities at Bicentennial Park, and have fun. But also take a moment to remember those Americans who are fighting to defend our way of life. Continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
Here’s to a safe, happy and festive Fourth of July celebration to everyone. Happy birthday, America, and thank you, servicemen and women of our country, for all that you do to defend America’s freedom.
