The 16th annual Gulf Coast Classic basketball tournament is set for tip-off 9 a.m. Monday at Barbers Hill.

Barbers Hill boys’ head basketball coach Nathan Toon said that the Gulf Coast Classic has always been a holiday tournament.

“The days we are allowed to have the tournament fluctuates with the school calendar,” he said. “You usually just get more teams if you hold a holiday tournament.”

Local teams in the 13-team boys’ side of the tournament bracket include 2005 champion Barbers Hill, 2006 champion Dayton, Goose Creek Memorial and last year’s winner Baytown Sterling.

“We send out invitations to teams but try to keep it to 4A teams,” Toon said. “We have some 3A and 5A but we try to keep it very competitive.

“Almost all the teams on the boys’ side of the tournament were in the playoffs last year. As a coach that’s what you want is to play against good competition.”

On the 18-team girls’ side of the bracket, local teams include Barbers Hill, Crosby and Baytown Sterling.

The past three years of the tournament the crown has gone to Hastings or Westbury Christian.

In 2005 and 2007 Hastings won it, while Westbury Christian won the girls’ bracket in 2006.

“The benefit of a holiday tournament is that it’s nice to take five or six days off for Christmas and then be able to come back in and play,” Lady Eagles head coach John Chancellor said. “You don’t want to come back and practice for four days so this allows us to play.

“We can come back and get in shape and get into a rhythm and get all the rust off this way.”

Toon said the tournament is just a great way for Barbers Hill to show off their schools.

“The games are played at the high school, middle school and intermediate gyms,” he said. “We can use this to show people how nice our facilities are here at Barbers Hill.

“I remember when I was at Orangefield and just always thought they put on a great tournament for everybody. There are so many people in the community and other coaches that help with it.”
