If it’s not one thing for the Sterling boys’ basketball team then it’s another.
One week after getting exposed at home defensively by Atascocita, the Rangers struggled on the other end of the spectrum, as they were unable to hit a shot unguarded — literally.
Sterling made 16 of 37 from the free throw line in a 49-44 loss to Kingwood Tuesday night. The loss dropped Sterling to 16-12 overall and 2-6 in district play to start the second round.
“Our free throw shooting went further south than we would have liked,” Sterling head coach Mark Patton said. “If it’s not one thing then it’s another. Our defense was fine but we needed to pick up our offense and couldn’t make a shot.”
Neither team looked all that impressive offensively as the tone for the game was set in the first quarter with Kingwood leading 7-5. The Mustangs went scoreless in the first four and a half minutes of play but did not pay a heavy price as Sterling also struggled from the field missing eight of its first nine shots from the field.
Kingwood found its range in the second quarter extending its lead to 15-5 by making three of its first four shots. Leriesse Watson gave Sterling a boost off of the bench with five points to draw the home team within 15-10 but by the time the half rolled around, the Mustangs held a 21-13 lead. In the first half alone, the Rangers were four of 24 from the field and five of 16 from the line.
The Rangers kept the game within striking distance in the third quarter. Andre Corley connected from beyond the arc to cut the lead to 24-20 and moments later, a put back by Cartavious Kincade closed the gap to 26-23 but going into the fourth quarter it was a 31-24 game with Kingwood on top.
The Mustangs extended the floor to start the fourth quarter in an attempt to work time off of the clock. Missed free throws and turnovers kept Sterling in the game with a chance to pull it out. A Kincade basket off of a steal with 5:10 remaining made the score 35-32 but the Mustangs answered with the next six points of the game. A couple of 3-pointers late in the game by Derrick Thompson made the final score closer but any chance Sterling had of a comeback was wasted by three consecutive offensive rebounds by Kingwood off of missed free throws.
“This season has turned into what we could have and should have done,” Patton said. “The race is getting further away from us each game due to mental lapses and free throw shooting.”
Adrian Fontenot scored 12 points to lead Sterling despite getting limited looks in the final three quarters. Kincade added 10 points, all of which came in the second half. Tevin Svihovec scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half to lead Kingwood.
Sterling will face off against Lee on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Lee College athletic facility.
