One week past Thanksgiving and the Dayton Bronco football team is still going strong.

The next challenge for Dayton will come in the form of Livingston tonight at 7 p.m. at Galena Park ISD Stadium in a Class 4A Division II regional semifinal matchup.

Dayton enters the game with a 9-3 record and an eight-game winning streak.

In the streak, the Broncos are averaging 42 points a game and allowing 4.5 points per game. In last week’s 42-10 win over Texas City, the Broncos did not give up a first down until late in the first half and dominated what had been a potent Stingaree offensive attack.

A fumble deep in Bronco territory led to three of the Texas City points.

“We did the worst thing you can do in a big game against Texas City and turned the ball over at the beginning of the game,” Dayton head coach Jerry Stewart said. “But we held them to a field goal. We knew they were explosive but we have been playing pretty good defense.”

Dayton held Texas City to 188 total yards in the game, the majority of which came in the second half after the Broncos held a 28-3 edge at intermission. A similar effort against Livingston will be needed.

In the Lion’s 42-7 win over Washington, they rushed for 256 yards on the ground. The passing game was also a factor as Livingston completed only three passes yet still gained 117 yards in the air.

“They are real big on the offensive line,” Stewart said. “They go about 280 or 290 and we only have one kid over 180 pounds on defense. We will have to use our quickness.”

On the flip side, Livingston will have to find a way to stop the big-play Dayton offense.

Working out of a no-huddle spread, the Broncos turned in a dominant outing against Texas City despite committing four turnovers and dropping several passes in the first half.

“We turned the ball over and still won which tells you that you are playing pretty good defense,” Stewart said.

“Gregory Charles is coming into his own at quarterback. He has thrown 25 touchdowns and been intercepted four times and has only been sacked once since taking over Cody Green. He just does a good job and has a pretty good command of the game.”

Charles threw for 247 yards against Texas City. One of his main targets was junior A.J. Dugat, who had nine receptions for 102 yards.

Dugat did a little bit of everything as he completed a 23-yard touchdown pass and rushed for 68 yards. The junior also had an interception.

Dugat is one of three skill position players who line up on both sides of the ball for Dayton because of the numbers game. The Broncos only suited up 28 during the regular season.

“We have the numbers of a 2A school,” Stewart said. “We have too many kids that want to drive around with their elbows stuck out of the window of a pickup truck, too many kids playing hacky sack in P.E.

“In the 70s, Permian was dressing out 80 but would only play 15, so little has changed over the years.”
