The Lee boy’s basketball team was unable to get over the hump late in the fourth quarter as it fell to 0-7 on the year in a 46-41 loss to Sam Rayburn. The Ganders cut to lead to 36-34 on a Jacque Hudson three-point play with 2;30 left in the game but turnovers and big plays by the Texans doomed the Ganders.

“Unforced turnovers killed us,” Lee head coach Dote Williams said. “They made the shots and we didn’t. I hope it’s a learning process, we are still learning how to play the game.”

Offensive shortcomings in the first and third quarters allowed Sam Rayburn to take double digit leads but each time, Lee found a way to come back sparked by the defense. After playing passive man-to-man in the first quarter, the Ganders stretched the defense beyond the half-court and forced the tempo of the game into a quicker pace.

“We went with a change of personnel and we were able to do more things,” Williams said. “We were able to go up and down a little bit. These guys know how to play defense. It may not always show up on the scoreboard, but they know where they are supposed to be.”

Offensively, the Ganders suffered a power outage in the first quarter shooting 0-8 from the field. While Lee had some good looks it was unable to find the bottom of the basket. A Hudson free throw with 4:03 remaining in the quarter made the score 3-1 but Rayburn drained a three and picked up some second chances on the offensive boards to build a 10-1 going into the second.

Rayburn hit another three to start the second quarter to make the score 13-1. At that point the Ganders began to find their stroke. Xavier Scott hit from beyond the arc to make the score 13-4 to start a 9-0 run. Anthony Rivon led Lee in the quarter with 10 points. The junior’s three from the top of the key on an assist by Jordan Tarver closed the gap to 15-13 and at the end of the half Lee trailed 17-15.

Rebounding once again hurt the Ganders at the beginning of the second half as the Texans took a 25-17 lead, five points off of the offensive boards. Sam Rayburn extended the lead to 33-23 late in the quarter. Cornelius Laday, seeing his first action of the year because of an injury put an end to the run with a three-point play to cut the lead to 33-23 going into the fourth.

Momentum continued to favor the Ganders as they brought the lead down to five points midway through the final frame. Lee could have closed the gap further except for turnovers. In the first half, the Ganders only committed five turnovers but would lose the ball 11 times in the second half. The turnover battle was not one-sided as Rayburn struggled to get the ball down the court.

Trailing 36-31, Hudson stripped the ball off a Texan guard and drove the length of the court and converted a three-point play to make the score 36-34. Lee had an opportunity to tie the game but a missed shot was turned into a lay-up on the other end of the floor giving the Texans breathing room, as they would go on for the win.

As a team, Lee shot 36 percent from the field and 11 of 14 from the line. Rivon led with 15 points and Hudson added six. Both Laday and Jace Parker finished with five.
