It took a half for Sterling to find its footing in the season opener against Spring. The Lady Lions never found theirs.

Unable to cope with the intense defensive pressure of the Lady Rangers, Spring put up an anemic effort offensively in a 44-13 loss Tuesday night.

Sterling forced 34 turnovers and held the Lady Lions to 12 percent shooting from the field.

Offensively, Sterling (1-0) did not fare much better in the first half, but settled down in the second half to score 29 of its 44 points. Senior center Mahogany Terry scored 11 of her game-high 17 points in the half.

“We needed to settle into our offense and be more patient,” Sterling head coach Laurie Welch said of the Lady Rangers’ offensive improvement in the second half.

“We talked about hitting some shots on the outside but they left “Mo” (Terry) open in the second half. We read the defense and “Mo” made some shots.

“We were playing on adrenaline with it being the first half of the first game. We didn’t really take care of the ball as well as I would have liked, but I feel pretty good about what I saw tonight.”

Defensively, Sterling gave Welch plenty to like in the first half with pressure that forced 17 turnovers. A Candi Allen 3-point shot from the top of the key gave the Lady Rangers a 5-3 lead midway through the first quarter and they would never trail.

The Lady Rangers only shot four of 19 from the field in the first half but converted five of nine from the free throw line to take a 15-8 lead into the half. Spring guard Diamond Johnson was hurt in the first quarter and did not return to compound the Lady Lions’ problems against the Sterling defense.

Sterling came out of the half and began to get the ball to Terry, who took advantage of a mismatch down low to score eight points in the third quarter.

Junior guard Deshelle Isaac also got involved offensively, scoring five of her six points in the quarter as Sterling outscored Spring 17-3 to take a 32-11 lead and put the game away.

Terry had seven rebounds and four steals to go along with her 17 points. Senior Candi Allen finished with nine points and eight rebounds. Isaac and Maegan Thomas each had six points and Emeral Ford had one point offensively but stood out defensively with three steals.

In sub-varsity action, the Lady Ranger junior varsity went on a 15-0 run to take a 25-18 lead. But Sterling lost the game at the free throw line down the stretch in a 30-29 final. Denise White scored 10 points and Jessica Felder had seven.

The Sterling freshmen went into overtime to take a 40-37 win over Spring. Mykia Jackson led the Lady Rangers with 13 points and Lindsay Thompson added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Sterling will return to action Friday when it travels to Alvin.

St. Agnes 61, Barbers Hill 58

HOUSTON — The Lady Eagles opened the season with their center getting ready for the state cross country meet and St. Agnes’ Jenni Nwokedi made them pay.

Nwokedi, who has committed to play at Tulane University, took advantage of Shannon Mudd’s absence against much smaller Barbers Hill players in the final period as St. Agnes rallied from a 46-43 deficit after three quarters.

Paris Carter led the Lady Eagles with 26 points scored while Jasmine Carter added 10 points.

Barbers Hill’s varsity returns to the court Friday at 4 p.m., when it hosts La Marque.

Crosby 53,

Clear Brook 51

FRIENDSWOOD — Rhadaye McAllister came up with a pair of late steals and followed them up with free throws as Crosby rallied late for a 53-51 win over Clear Brook in the season opener for both teams Tuesday.

Crosby took a 40-31 lead into the final period, but went scoreless for five minutes, allowing Clear Brook to take a brief 48-47 lead.

LaQuisha “Peewee” Walker led the Lady Cougars with 17 points, hitting three treys and eight free throws. McAllister finished with 11 points and Nikkolette Mora added 10.

Crosby withstood three close-in shots by the Wolverines in the final 10 seconds.

The Lady Cougars next play Thursday morning at 8 a.m. when they open play in the Baytown Lee Lady Gander Tip-off Classic against Texas City.
