As far as season openers it was typical. But for the Rebels it was good enough.

Sophomore Hollis Giles scored 31 points to lead Lee College to a 95-74 win over its future Region XIV rivals Saturday night. Giles scored 25 of his points in the first half on eight of 12 shooting and spent most of the second half on the bench.

“I was trying to make a statement,” Giles said. “I’m just letting people know they are going to have to bring it when they play us. I think we are better than people perceive. We are just trying to prove them wrong.”

Lee was picked to finish 11th in Region XIV in a preseason poll. The Rebels only have two players coming back from last season. That did not prove to be a problem against the Seahawks as all nine players that suited up scored. Freshman C.J. Busby scored 16 points and freshman center Sergio Trocha added 14 against the vertically challenged team from Port Arthur. Mutombo Yombo is the starting center for Lee but was held out with a lingering injury.

Port Arthur did have success against Lee in the paint rebounding and was able to get some good looks at the basket, particularly in the second half when play disintegrated into a free for all at times but were no match for the Rebels man for man.

“I thought we shot the ball well as a team when we took good shots,” Lee head coach Roy Champagne said. “I liked our intensity. The group gets along very well and they come to the gym with an attitude.”

Port Arthur stayed close in the early going but Giles kept Lee in the lead. The point guard hit his first four shots, three from beyond the arc and had 15 points in the first ten minutes. The Rebels were very good from the three-point line in the first half making 10 of their 20 shots.

It was conventional three-point plays that gave Lee separation from Port Arthur in the first half. With the score 20-17, Port Arthur native Dominique Keller converted a three point play. The Seahawks answered with a basket to close the gap to 23-19 with 10:46 remaining in the first half but Giles converted a three-point play to start a run that would give the Rebels a 31-21 lead.

Lee College received a gift moments later when freshman C.J. Busby nailed a three-point shot and Port Arthur was called for a technical. Giles hit the two free throws to give the Rebels a 36-21 lead. Lee College would extend the lead beyond 20 points for the rest of the game.

Keller, a preseason third team All-American, scored 12 points in the first half and went scoreless in the second half in limited playing time. Sophomore St. Paul Thomas added nine points and sophomore Terrence Littlefield added seven points.

Lee College will be on the road early this week when they travel to Mississippi for a couple of games on the road.
