Who would have thought the Ganders’ playoff hopes would hinge on beating Atascocita at the beginning of the season?

No doubt about it. The football gods have been cruel to Lee this season.

To call Lee short-handed in its 23-8 loss to Channelview Friday night would be an understatement. The good news for the Ganders is several players will be back in the lineup. Starting wide receiver and backup quarterback Josh Jones has been cleared and will return to the lineup. Starting quarterback Octavio Torres is still day-to-day. Starting offensive guard Mike Garcia will be back in the lineup and starting linebacker David Hare could also return.

The Ganders did little to help their own cause by coming out flat Friday night. The defense gave up 255 of the Falcons’ 319 yards and all 23 points in the first half.

The Ganders went to the ground early with Kevin Craft taking a pitch in motion and working Jesse Luna running up the middle. Craft also lined up at quarterback out of the shotgun as Lee put in a rollout series for the senior. Craft completed one of his two passes for 22 yards.

One bright spot in the game was the play of junior wide receiver Jahwran Goode, who caught four passes for 79 yards in the game. Another bright spot was the play of the defense in the second half.

The Ganders will enter the final week of the season with a 3-3 District 21-5A record, tied for third place with Port Arthur Memorial, Kingwood and Channelview. The Falcons will face Beaumont West Brook while Kingwood will take on Sterling and Memorial will take on Humble. Starting wide receiver and backup quarterback Josh Jones has been cleared and will be back in the lineup.
