Cross-country athletes from both Lee and Sterling saved the best for last at the Class 5A Region III Cross Country Meet on Saturday at North Harris County College.
Jessica Bitterly posted a personal best, finishing the course in 12:25 to lead all Baytown athletes finishing 57th out of 158. Sterling qualified for the meet as a team after finishing second at the District 21-5A meet and came in 16th.
Bitterly qualified for the regional meet with a 10th place finish at district and improved her personal best by 10 seconds.
“She has improved a lot since last year,” REL head coach Faith Chew said. “She has been dedicated to the sport and that has made a big difference. She ended the season on a good note. Since she is a junior she can come back and attack it again.
“She’s a good leader and is good all around at academics and athletics,” she added.
Deshelle Isaac who took 57th overall in a time of 12:25 led Sterling. Isaac was coming off of a ninth place finish at the district meet. Freshman Mykia Jackson finished 75th overall, turning in a time of 12:41.
“Mykia stepped up for us as a freshman,” Sterling head coach Christie Smith said. “I felt pretty good, the girls competed well. Considering everybody but two started with high 15’s and got near 13, I have nothing to complain about. They worked hard and put forth a good effort.”
Five of the Lady Rangers competing in the event posted personal records. Rounding out the top five for Sterling was Isabel Tobar who finished 82nd with a time of 12:46, Courtney Johnson who placed 130th with a time of 13:31 and Chanel Reinertsen who turned in a 13:45 to finish at 137.
