Ask Corti Wilson what his most memorable moment was last season and he can describe it as if it was yesterday. Baytown Christian Academy was facing Hyde Park in the first round of the playoffs and Wilson was on the sideline — watching the game.
In 2005, Wilson was the quarterback for the Bulldogs but transferred to Robert E. Lee last fall and suited up for the Ganders as a reserve cornerback. By the spring semester, Wilson was back at BCA where he will start this year at running back.
“Watching the playoff game hurt me,” Wilson said. “I had played with last year’s seniors since I was a freshman and I felt bad that I had left them. I thought I could have helped.”
The Bulldogs will be looking for Wilson’s help tonight when they open the season at Sterling’s auxiliary field against North Lutheran at 7 p.m. The Lions are a division higher than BCA and will test the running defense with their single wing attack.
“They are a great test out of the box,” head coach John DeRulle said. “If you are undisciplined you well get beat. We need this test as a football team.”
Wilson is one of the reasons that the Bulldogs are excited about this upcoming season. The team has their biggest roster ever suiting up 32 kids and boasts their deepest team.
Defensively the Lions will line up in a 3-3-5, a defense that the Bulldogs are familiar with.
“They play an attacking defense and attack from every angle,” DeRulle said, “but we see it a lot in our district and are comfortable against it.”
Comfort had a lot to do with Wilson returning to BCA. He felt like the school provided a better chance for him to go to college as well as provided a feeling of family that the public school sector did not. When he came back he also noted that the mentality of the program had changed.”
“The thing I have noticed since I came back is that the team cares more,” Wilson said. “We are trying harder and giving more effort. We all want to go to state but to do that you have to win a district championship so that is our goal. We are mentally focused and want it bad.”
Anahuac
Friday night will be a battle of rebuilding teams as Anahuac travels to Class 3A Hardin-Jefferson for the season opener. The 7:30 kickoff will feature the debut of Anahuac head coach Darrell Barbay as he matches wits against David Martel, brother of former Anahuac head coach Gary Martel. Hardin-Jefferson defeated the Panthers 16-9 last season.
“I always get nervous,” Barbay said. “I’ve already thrown up three times today. Not because I don’t think we can win. I’m excited for the kids and I’m excited for the community.”
Anahuac posted a 2-8 record last season and will face a Hawk team that posted at 3-7 record last season and returns six starters on both sides of the ball. The Panthers will pay close attention to junior running back Trey Burrell who is listed at 6-1, 190 and has been timed with a 4.5 in the forty. Last season he rushed for 955 yards.
“I think they are pretty good,” Barbay said. “They have a real good running back. We have to stop him to have a chance. We are going to play hard in the fourth quarter and will be in the game. “

Crosby
The Cougars will open the season at home as they host second-year school Atascocita. The Cougars are coming off of a 7-4 record last season, including a 42-16 win in the meeting between the two schools.
Atascocita went 1-9 in their inaugural year. The Eagles do have the luxury of returning all of their starters and should be much improved this season. Among the top threats for the Humble ISD school will be senior quarterback Daniel Tatman who threw for 1,075 yards last season and running back Jeremy Braden who rushed for 673 yards.
Countering the offensive threat will be a Crosby defense that is returning six starters and was one of the top units in District 21-4A last season. Offensively the Cougars will feature the dual-threat of 1,000 yard rusher Chance Casey and Toris Doze in the backfield. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. tonight.
Dayton
The best area game of the week should be at West Orange-Stark tonight when Dayton takes on West Orange-Stark. The Mustangs are once again one of the teams in 3A and have only lost two games at home since 2000.
Last season the Mustangs posted an 11-1 record and defeated Dayton 26-9 in the season opener for both schools. Running back DePaulrick Garrett returns after rushing for 1,327 yards last season.
The Broncos return a wealth of talent from last year’s 9-3 team. Quarterback Cody Green returns after throwing for 1,589 yards and rushing for 689 yards. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
