Sterling drops two in Pearland

Despite the two losses the Lady Rangers, now 13-3, more than held their own against competition from around the state and will continue play in the silver bracket today.
Starting the day off against San Antonio Churchill, Sterling held a 22-16 lead in the first game only to fall 29-27. The match ended in two games as Churchill took a 25-14 decision in the second game.
“We played well,” Sterling head coach Nadine Horne said. “The first game we shouldn’t have lost. We had too many unforced errors but that is OK. We went to the tournament to learn from our mistakes.”
Courtney Zink had 10 digs and Amber Russell added 17 assists in the loss. Ashley Tadlock was credited with six digs and five kills with Alyssa Cotten picking up four kills and three digs.
Sterling rebounded with a 25-21, 25-12 win over San Antonio MacArthur as Russell had 17 assists and Zink 11 digs.
Priscilla Massengale scored seven kills and four digs and Cotten added five digs and four kills. Lauren Lamb also had four kills in the game.
The final game ended in a loss for Sterling as it dropped a 22-25, 26-24, 25-12 decision. Cotten had her best game of the tournament with 17 kills and 10 digs. Zink was credited with 18 digs and Tadlock had eight kills and six digs. Russell also had a big game with 33 assists.
Barbers Hill made themselves at home in the Santa Fe Tournament with two wins on the opening day of play. Barbers Hill opened up with a 25-13, 25-16 win over La Porte and then knocked off host Santa Fe.
“La Porte was huge; they had a lot of height,” Barbers Hill head coach John Leonard said. “Everybody got to play and contribute. We just got off of the bus and played well.”
The game against Santa Fe was much closer as the Eagles came away with a 23-25, 27-25, 25-11 win. In the second game, the Hill was trailing 24-20 but ripped off six points in a row as Courtney Dessel entered the game and made a big contribution.
“It was back and forth like it always is against Santa Fe,” Leonard said. “I’m really happy with the way the kids played.”
Barbers Hill improved to 13-1 and will return to action today when they travel to Dickinson. The Santa Fe tourney will resume on Saturday with the Eagles facing the loser of Deer Park’s match with Rockwall.
