As a coach in the Beaumont Independent School District, Calvin Cooper developed an appreciation for Sterling track. So much that when the job came open, he considered it a job that was too good to pass up. In Cooper, Sterling found a coach that was too good to pass up.
After spending 31 years coaching in Beaumont, Cooper will take over the Sterling boys’ track and cross-country program. For the past 20 years he has coached at Beaumont Central where he was the girls track coach this past season.
“The rich tradition of and heritage of Sterling track drew me to the job,” Cooper said. “We had a healthy competition with Sterling when I was in 5A. This was an offer that I could not refuse and this was a job that I aspired to. It is a challenge that I look forward to. Coach Joseph did an outstanding job with them last year.”
The boys and girls track and field jobs came open when Orlandor Joseph accepted a position to coach the girls’ track team in Dickinson. Last year the boys’ team was the regional runner-up and placed fourth at the state track meet.
“It’s going to be a full time job and I look forward to raising the standards of the program,” Cooper said. “My first district championship was held at Baytown and I hope to extend the good luck that I have had there.”
Cooper brings experience as a coach and an athlete to the Ranger program. He competed interscholastically in Texas before moving on to New Mexico Junior College. Once Cooper completed his eligibility in New Mexico he moved to Oklahoma where he was a quarter-miler at Oklahoma University.
As a former athlete, Cooper is able to use that experience in teaching his athletes and students.
“It’s competition,” Cooper said. “I like to see the kids excel and I like to see the character of the kids and teach character. Being a teacher and a coach are synonymous.”
In addition to his head coaching duties, Cooper will teach Language Arts.
“He has a great deal of experience,” boys’ campus athletic director Herb Minyard said. “I know he will come in and pick up our track program and do good things.”
