Now that the Ganders have been named the most popular mascot in Class 5A, they have the opportunity to take the overall state title. The field has been set in the first ever Mascot Bowl Finals presented by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football Magazine online with the voting lasting until Monday at noon.
Facing off against the vaunted bird are the Fredericksburg Battlin’ Billies, Cuero Gobblers, Mason Punchers and the Hamlin Pied Pipers. The Battlin’ Billies claimed the top spot in Class 4A in a tight contest. It claimed 34 percent of the vote to edge out the Forney Jackrabbits who claimed 30 percent of the vote.
The lower classes all turned out to be runaways with Cuero taking 61 percent of the vote in Class 3A, Mason capturing 57 percent of the vote in 2A and Hamlin winning in Class A with 53 percent of the vote.
The winners were selected out of a group of four finalists in each class. The criteria for voting are based on originality, uniqueness, indigenous and logo. Only one mascot was limited to the field, which was in the Ganders favor since no other school uses that mascot.
Early in the voting, Hamlin and Cuero were tied for first place with 31 percent of the vote. Fredericksburg was in second with 20 percent. Baytown Lee and Mason were heading up the rear with nine and eight percent respectively. By late Thursday it had turned into a tight race between the top three teams.
In the Class 5A vote, the Ganders also trailed early in the single percentile before a determined effort placed them in first place with 43 percent of the vote.
