Lee College’s search for an athletic director came to an end last night when the Board of Regents unanimously picked Charles ‘Chuck’ Lawrence to fill the position.

Last year, Lawrence was the head football coach and assistant athletic director at Navarro Junior College in Corsicana. The Bulldogs are also a member of Region XIV. He was also the athletic director at Cisco for six years prior to arriving at Navarro.

“Karen Guthmiller and I have been good friends through the years,” Lawrence said. “She has done a great job down there. When I found out she was stepping down I put in my application and did everything that I could to get that job. Lee College has a great reputation.”

Lawrence fills a position that was posted last spring. A probationary contract was offered to Mike Keifer of Neosho, KS by unanimous decision of the Board of Regents on May 17. In June, Keifer jilted Lee College for a similar position at Darton College in Georgia. The board reopened then reopened the job.

“He has been working in community colleges in Texas,” LC president Martha Ellis said. “He was the assistant athletic director at Navarro and it seems like the next logical step. We are excited.”

Lawrence is expected to start in the first part of August. He will fill an administrative position instead of faculty and received a 12-month contract for $60,143.

“I’m going to have to get down there and see what the plusses and minuses are when I get there,” Lawrence said. “All three teams made the playoffs last year and the tennis team won the national championship.

“I was a baseball player in high school and college. Although I was a successful football coach and grew up in Texas where football is king I believe that all sports are equal and I enjoy them all.”
