Former and current residents and their families are invited to reminisce about their days in Barrett Station at the 21st annual Barrett Station Homecoming celebration. During the week of July 16-21, activities and performances will be featured to help celebrate unification within the community.
“Residents can come back and see what’s going on here,” Barrett Station Civic League vice president Willie Goodlow said.
The celebration, hosted by the Barrett Station Civic League, will begin Monday with king and queen contests. Goodlow said contestants will be judged on their talents, poise and various other categories. The contests begin at 7 p.m. in the Barrett Station Community Center.
Everyone is invited to showcase their talents at the “Barrett’s Got Talent” show July 17 at the community center. Winners will be awarded first, second and third places. Those interested in participating in the free contest must register with Denise Mitchell at 713-392-6230 or Patricia Bass at 832-541-4958.
The Open Mic Talent Explosion at 6:30 p.m. July 18 will feature local rap and gospel artists. Barrett Station residents are encouraged to participate as well, and must register at 281-328-4713 or with Patrick Leonard at 281-838-7773. Participants of all ages are welcomed at both talent showcases.
The Homecoming celebration culminates July 21 and kicks off with a parade at 10 a.m. The route begins at FM 1962 and FM 2100, and will end at the Riley Chambers Community Park. Current and former Barrett Station residents can decorate unique floats and cars to display in the parade, which will also feature 99-year-old Barrett Station resident Willie Anderson Sr. Goodlow said participation and volunteerism with the parade has grown steadily every year, and with the help of the Barrett Station Junior Civic League, more organizers and judges will enhance the parade.
“The younger generation is really stepping up,” she said. “Everything is coming together really nicely.”
July 21 will also feature several other activities, including a health fair with free health screenings from 9 a.m. to noon at the Riley Chambers Community Center, a blood drive, and three basketball tournaments for children ages five to 20. Each tournament will award prizes to the first, second and third place winners.
The celebration will end July 21 with a benefit musical hosted by the Barrett Station Ministerial Alliance. After the parade, residents can gather at Mt. Rose Church of God in Christ at 13000 FM 2100 to watch the performance.
