It may not be exactly July 4, but come June 30, folks from Crosby, Huffman, Barrett Station and Highlands won’t be hurting for things to do to celebrate America’s independence.

The East Lake Houston 4th of July Celebration at the Crosby Fairgrounds will include the customary fireworks and a parade. The event is being held on the Saturday before July 4, which falls on a Wednesday this year.

The celebration will also feature a special Feed the Veterans meal at which all U.S. veterans and active military personnel are welcome to eat. U.S. Rep. Ted Poe will give a special July 4 speech honoring the veterans.

But that’s only the beginning. After the parade, the fairgrounds will play host to a car show, games, horses, plenty of food and even a weenie dog race. Hill Country Jane will be on hand to play some country music throughout the evening.

The parade kicks off at 5 p.m., though anyone wishing to participate in the event must line up at 4 p.m. Visitors are welcome to bring their cars, trucks or trailers, so long as they’re decorated with a Stars & Stripes theme. The best theme will receive a special trophy at a tailgate party following the festivities.

The Feed the Veterans meal will begin at 6 p.m. under the fairgrounds pavilion, and the ceremony featuring Poe will begin at 6:30 p.m. Last year’s event fed more than 400 veterans and military personnel.
