MONT BELVIEU — During the past four years at Barbers Hill, Cameron Campbell excelled in the classroom and on the diamond. As a result the two-time all-district selection will attend Lamar University next year where he will play baseball and study engineering.

“I’ve always pushed myself,” Campbell said. “My parents have wanted to see me succeed, they have been my biggest influence.”

Campbell graded out over the 100 percentile mark academically and will major in mechanical engineering as he works toward a masters degree in aerospace engineering. He’ll be doing all this while playing catcher for the Cardinals, BH assistant coach Jackie Byrd’s alma mater.

“Jackie always wanted me to be a Cardinal,” Campbell said. “It’s not too small but you can get around. Lamar offers a lot of little things that appealed to me. Playing at the college level I just need to keep moving forward and see how the game is played at the college level. The competition is a lot harder and the athletes are more consistent at that level.”

While academics have always played a big role in Campbell’s life, so has athletics. Campbell played basketball early in high school before giving up the sport to concentrate on baseball, where he was a two-year starter at the varsity level. By that time he had already made a commitment to play college baseball.

“I have wanted to play college baseball since I was 12 years old,” Campbell said. “I played select baseball for Craig Cervenka and I had the chance to see others from around the nation. I kind of felt like I had what it took to make it with hard work.”

This past season Campbell was a part of a talented group of seniors that helped lead Barbers Hill to the Class 4A Region 3 semifinals where they fell to Montgomery. Although his days as an Eagle are behind him, Campbell will still have an opportunity to suit up once more with teammates Derek Hulsey and Colby Townley in the HABCA All-Star game at Reckling Field on the campus of Rice University. The game is scheduled for June 20th.

“It’s exciting to be recognized,” Campbell said. “To be chosen is a great honor, to play with Derek and Colby one more time is going to be really exciting for me.”

According to Barbers Hill head coach Gil Stalbaum, Campbell’s best days as a baseball player lie ahead of him at the collegiate level.

“It’s a great opportunity,” Stalbaum said. “Cameron is a great catcher and I think he is going to be a better hitter than he was for us. The sky is the limit for him. He is a smart kid and that helps a lot.”
