They brought more than a thousand plates, cups and forks, and organizers of the St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic parish’s annual church bazaar didn’t expect them to nearly run out.
But by 3 p.m., more than 1,000 people had already purchased some of the tender brisket donated by Junior Forrest, and raffle tickets were selling like hotcakes. Last year’s event raised nearly $20,000, and the 2007 bazaar seems almost certain to smash that total.
“This is just a huge turnout,” said Linda Roberson. “We’re so grateful and excited.”
On a warm, sunny day that never quite become hot, residents of Highlands and visitors from the area gathered at the church on South Main Street to chow down and have fun. The kids stayed busy with a Moonwalk and carnival games, while the older folks had a few beers and signed up for the live and silent auctions.
The raffle featured some big-time prizes like a tractor, a patio set and a laptop computer. Claudine Lewis, director of religious education at the church, said God smiled on the church this particular Sunday.
“Last year was really hot, and we were getting ready for another hot one today, but the weather was absolutely beautiful today,” Lewis said. “We’ve had a lot of people show up, I know we’ve at least sold more Cokes than last year. This event is just so important, because this money is what our church operates on.”
