Speedboat racers from several different states will glide onto the San Jacinto River Sunday for the Baytown Boat Club’s Annual Highlands Spring Classic.

Some of the boats can go from zero to 100 mph in four seconds and reach speeds of 120 to 140 mph on the straight-aways.

Three classes of boats — SST 120 tunnels, SST 45 tunnels and tri-hulls — will be competing for first-, second- and third-place trophies and to garner American Power Boat Association points. Whoever has the most points at the end of the season wins, Yates said.

Tunnel boats are like a small airplane with practically nothng in the water but the propeller.

While the boats zip through the water, the club will sell cold beer, sodas, barbecue sandwiches, hot dogs and famous fried chicken at concession stands.

The races start at noon and will end around 5 p.m. with trophy presentations.

They will take place at 1600 Clear Lake Road in Highlands. Tickets purchased before the event cost $5 and purchased at the gate cost $7.
