A young Baytown man died Monday after his small sports utility vehicle was struck head-on by a larger SUV on FM 565 between Eagle Drive and Loop 207.

Michael Todd Crawford, 22, was driving along FM 565 shortly after noon when his black Chevy Blazer collided with a gold Chevy Tahoe headed in the opposite direction. Baytown and Mont Belvieu police arrived to find Crawford already dead, and the driver of the Tahoe seriously injured.

The driver of the larger vehicle, whose name was not released, was taken by LifeFlight Helicopter to Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. No report on the driver’s condition was available at press time.

Mont Belvieu Police Capt. Virgil Blasdel and members of the Baytown Police Department accident reconstruction team are still investigating the cause of the accident. The portion of road on which the wreck occurred is narrow and curves in several spots.

The road was shut down for more than three hours as crews tried to clear the site. Shortly before 4 p.m., the two vehicles were towed away. Crawford’s SUV was merely a black crumpled mess, and the entire front and driver’s side of the Tahoe appeared to be smashed in.

“Baytown police helped us out a lot,” Blasdel said. “They have a really good accident reconstruction team, so I’m confident they’ll figure out what happened. But there’s no question it’s just a horrible tragedy. It always hurts to see something like this.”
