Though its request for funding was only partially fulfilled, Lee College is still planning to open a satellite campus in McNair, albeit a scaled-down version of its original vision.
Designs for the new substation at 3555 Interstate 10 East are complete, and now the college awaits approval by the Harris County Community and Economic Development department. If and when the proposal is approved, the project would then go up for bidding, which would take up to 90 days. Site development and construction would follow, setting the completion date at about 15 months after approval.
The project will cost about $2.3 million, well below the original projections. Harris County funded only the creation of a facility and program for cosmetology. The county may provide additional funds for new programs if the cosmetology school is a success. The campus will also offer limited student services.
“This is still going to be a very exciting development for the McNair area and for Lee College,” Lee College spokeswoman Debbie Jordan said. “The facility is beautiful, and the classes will be first-rate.”
The 6,540-square-foot building was designed by BGK Architects in Baytown.
The idea for a McNair campus sprouted out of a public forum in 2002 with the HCCED and residents of McNair and nearby Linus. One of the recurring themes of the meeting was the need for better educational opportunities, especially at the college level.
Lee College held a forum in 2003, at which the school identified a number of vocational programs it would like to implement. Those included pipefitting, welding and heavy-equipment training. McNair seemed like a natural fit.
The college received a $300, 000 block grant from the county to acquire the property, setting the process in motion. Though it did not flower to its full bloom, it will still be a welcome new part of the landscape.
