Chambers County’s brightest lights navigated the winding roads of Beach City on Tuesday to feast on chicken fried steak and honor outstanding contributions to their communities at the West Chambers County Chamber of Commerce’s 23rd annual awards banquet.

More than 250 citizens, including mayors, council members, judges and school board members, filled the R.W. Johnson Airpark for “A Country Celebration of Soaring Achievement.” The event showcased residents of Beach City, Cove and Mont Belvieu who volunteered their time and effort to improving the lives of fellow citizens.

John Hollaway received the Volunteer of the Year award for the city of Cove, for his 22 years of service in the fire department and his work as an Emergency Medical Technician.

Patsy Battle took home the Volunteer of the Year award for Mont Belvieu for her involvement with the senior center, Relay for Life and the Mont Belvieu Pilot’s Club. Her needlework has produced countless quilts and blankets for charities and for residents of hospices.

“She’s willing to drop everything to anyone out,” Mont Belvieu Mayor Nick Dixon said. “She helps out with any event she is asked, and she’s very multi-talented.”

Rita Standridge’s efforts against the building of an airport and her work on getting the area its own ZIP code were among the reasons for her being awarded Volunteer of the Year for Beach City.

“She doesn’t stop until she gets what she wants, and what’s she wants is what’s best for Beach City,” said Beach City Mayor Guido Persiani.

Also receiving awards were two local businesses. Barbers Hill Bank was tabbed as the Small Business of the Year and Enterprise Products received the award for Corporate Business of the Year.

The final award went to W.E. “Buddy” Irby, who earned the Person of the Year honor.

“Buddy’s a Barbers Hill boy who stuck to his roots and helped out a lot of people along the way,” 2005 Person of the Year Scott Neal said. “He’s a leader and a statesman, and it’s amazing to see him put so much energy doing what’s best for the community.”
