The Crosby Branch of the Harris County Public Library will close at 6 p.m. Friday for remodeling. The library will remain closed until January.

“We’re going to get new carpet, new paint,” said Branch Librarian Diane Barker. “We’re going to refresh it and just give it a facelift and bring it into the 21st century.”

The library at 135 Hare Road has not been remodeled since its opening in October 1987.

Barker said the library will be rearranged and will receive new carpet, paint and furniture. It will feature a new teen area and reading areas.

“It’s going to have some wonderful changes for the public, and it’s going to be much easier for them to use, said Barker.

The Crosby branch has approximately 46,000 books, magazines and multimedia in inventory, stored in its 10,500 square feet. Bookshelves lining the walls will be temporarily removed for painting, and the freestanding shelves will be lifted for new carpet installation.

“There will be more open space for people to walk and look around and sit, and the children’s area will be big,” she added.

Local artist Cindy Lee, who painted murals at the North Channel branch and the Northwest branch, will paint a mural on a wall in the children’s section paid by the Friends of the Crosby Library.

Patrons will not have access to the library during the renovation period but will be able to return books in the existing drop off box. The library will not receive any new donations after today until the renovations are completed.

Story time for children will continue to be held, but it will be moved to the Crosby Community Center.

“They will not have access to anything at the Crosby library because it will be closed,” said Rhoda Goldberg, Deputy Director for Harris County Public Libraries. “However, we have libraries all around there.”

Patrons can go to Atascocita Branch Library, located at 19520 Pinehurst Trail Drive in Humble, to pick up books that are reserved or on hold.

Other close Harris County Libraries include the North Channel Library, located at 15741 Wallisville Road in Houston, the Northwest Library, located at 11355 Regency Green Drive in Cypress, and the Stratford Library, located at 509 Stratford in Highlands.

Harris County Library cards are valid at any Harris County Library.
