BAYTOWN — For most of the season the Dayton Broncos have came out and dominated opponents from the opening kickoff till the final whistle. Unfortunately in the first half of Friday night’s Class 4A Region III Division II playoff contest the Broncos were on the other end.

Texas City held Dayton to 39 yards of offense while taking a three touchdown lead into the half. The Broncos played a lot better in the second half but it was too late as the Stingarees left Stallworth Stadium with a 35-21 victory.

Even though the Broncos season comes to an end at 9-3 it was another successful for season for head coach Jerry Stewart and his team as they captured their seventh district championship in 11 years and finished District 22-4A unbeaten.

This night though belonged to Texas City, and they did what the Broncos knew they were going to do — run the football. They ran the ball, and then some, to the tune of 358 yards on the night. Speedster Jarvis Carraway was at the head of the attack with 218 yards on 24 carries.

Texas City (9-3) took the opening kickoff and marched 80 yards on 11 plays to grab a 7-0 lead. It was quarterback Brandon Robinson capping off the drive with a one-yard  sneak to make it 7-0.

The Broncos offense then took the field and on their third play from scrimmage they committed a turnover as Cody Green was intercepted by Michael Ray who returned it 16 yards to the Bronco 37-yard line.

Seven plays later and at the Bronco one yard line it was Robinson who lunged forward to try and sneak it in again. He was hit by a herd of Dayton defenders and fumbled the ball into the hands of the Broncos’ John Gable. After the officials conferred, they ruled that Robinson had broke the plane of the goalline for a Stingaree score and a 14-0 lead with 3:13 left in the first quarter of play.

Dayton then took the ensuing kickoff and drove down to the Texas City 19-yard line before a Bronco fumble ended the scoring chance.

Trickery would give the Stingarees a 21-0 lead late in the first half as Robinson hit wide receiver Kyle Myers, who stepped behind the line of scrimmage and threw back across the field to a wide open Robinson, who followed a convoy of blockers into the end zone for a 23-yard touchdown.

In the second half, Dayton came out and went 80 yards on five plays. Green got the Broncos on the board by hitting A.J. Dugat who went up and made a one-handed catch while staying on his feet to go 50 yards for the first Bronco score of the night. After David Howard was successful on his P.A.T. the lead was down to 21-7 just two minutes into the third quarter.

Carraway and the Stingarees would answer with their own 80-yard drive with the senior running back taking a pitch and out racing Bronco defenders for a 68-yard touchdown run.

Green who passed for 214 yards on 11 of 20 passing would bring Dayton back again by hitting Michael Dugat on a screen pass for a 60-yard touchdown. The play was perfectly set up as the Broncos let the rush come in, then Green hit Dugat with a little soft pass and the senior running back outraced Texas City defenders to the end zone.

As they had done all night the Stingarees would answer, and this time it was the back-breaker, as Carraway capped off a 79-yard, eight-play drive with a 9-yard touchdown run on a 4th and one with 3:29 to go to make it 35-14.

The never say die Broncos did not quit and added a final score as Green hit A.J. Dugat for a 27-yard touchdown pass after Green had scampered 48 yards on the previous play.

Dayton totaled 301 yards in the second half while finishing with 340 on the night. A.J. Dugat led all receivers with four catches for 111 yards while Green added 69 yards rushing.

Texas City will go on to face today’s Houston Sterling/Brenham winner.
