Coming into Monday night’s non-district contest against the Livingston Lions, the Barbers Hill Eagles were looking to keep the momentum going and stay undefeated on the young season. And after three quarters of play it looked at if the Eagles were going to accomplish both, but the Lions used a pressing defense and some clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch to outlast the Eagles 65-60 at Barbers Hill High School.
The Eagles lead 47-43 heading into the fourth quarter of play thanks mostly to Brooks Ybarra who had 23 of his game high 25 points after three. But they were outscored 22-13 in the fourth quarter to drop to 2-1 on the season.
Ybarra started out quick by scoring five of the first six points to help Barbers Hill jump out to a 6-0 lead.
Livingston (2-1), then went on an 11-0 run capped off by a Garcia Lewis bucket to take a 11-6 with 1:10 left in the first quarter of play.
A jumper by Matt Gilbert of Barbers Hill midway through the second quarter tied things up at 18. After a three-pointer by Jeremy Flores at the 2:00 minute mark it was Livingston back up 25-20.
Ybarra then lead the Eagles on a 10-0 run at the close of the half by hitting a trey and then scored on a lay up just before the half-time buzzer to give Barbers Hill a 30-25 half-time lead. Both buckets were assisted by Ian Hamlin who chipped in with 13 points.
Barbers Hill then took its biggest lead of the night on a three-pointer by Chris Bradshaw, 45-38 with 2:10 left in the third quarter.
The Lions then went on a 9-2 run to tie things up at 47 apiece with 5:50 left in the game. A Lewis follow a couple of minutes later gave Livingston a 56-51 lead and forced an Eagle time-out.
Down 58-56 with under a minute to play, the Eagles did have a chance, but Ybarra’s three was long, forcing Barbers Hill to foul.
That’s when the Lions went clutch and hit seven of their last eight free-throws to ice the game away.
Mike Davis chipped in with nine points for the Eagles, while the Lions were lead by Gary Randolph with 16 points.
