Groves — There were those who picked the Dayton Broncos to finish fourth in District 22-4A. Well, the Broncos not only won another district championship but capped it off undefeated in district play thanks to another dominating performance Friday night, this time it was Port Neches-Groves who fell to the Broncos 33-2 at “The Reservation.”
The Broncos, who have advanced to the playoffs 11 straight years, faces Crosby in the first round of the playoffs.
With the Indian fight song in high force and nearly 10,000 in attendance, it was Cody Green who was solid again for the Broncos. The sophomore quarterback, who passed for five touchdowns last week against Nederland, added another four against the Indians.
Port Neches (5-5, 3-4), who was still alive for a playoff spot, grabbed an early lead over Dayton. A.J. Dugat who fielded an Indians punt in his own end zone was smothered by the Indians Jeremy Dominguez and Chris Fenton for a 2-0 lead midway through the first quarter.
Dayton (8-2 7-0), then put it on the Indians with a 21 point second quarter. The scoring started as the Broncos marched 53 yards on seven plays with Green hitting Andrew Thomas on a 16-yard touchdown play.
The defense set Dayton up for its next score as Ford Smesny intercepted a Harrison Tatum pass. The Broncos would only need four plays to make it 13-2 as Michael Dugat barreled his way in from 17 yards out. For the night Dugat finished with a game high 102 yards rushing on 15 carries.
Green then engineered the two-minute offense to perfection by moving Dayton 69 yards on 10 plays. The drive was capped off with Green hitting Ronnie Powell from seven yards out and Michael Dugat scored the two-point conversion. Dayton up 21-2 at the half.
Dayton then came out in the third quarter and once again looked sharp by going 80 yards on seven plays. For the second time of the night it was the Green to Thomas connection hooking up again, this time from 18-yards out and another Bronco score. On the drive Green was a perfect 3 of 3 passing for 60 yards.
Green who passed for 141 yards on 11 of 16 passing then ended the scoring by hitting Jacob Pickle on a four yard touchdown pass with :38 seconds left in the third quarter of play. The score was set up by a A.J. Dugat 46 yard run.
Dayton finished with 367 yards of total offense on the night. Tony Hill added an interception for the Broncos while John Gable and Chase Barnes had fumble recoveries.
