BAYTOWN — After winning six in a row and finishing District 19-4A with a perfect record, the Dayton Broncos were heading into the playoffs at the right time. Unfortunate for Dayton was the fact that they were playing a very good Beaumont Ozen team that made it to the playoffs by winning a coin flip so they had to feel like Lady Luck was on their side.
Maybe she was on Friday night, as Ozen defeated Dayton 14-13 in a Division I Region III Class 4A playoff game at Stallworth Stadium.
Down 14-7 heading into the fourth quarter, the Bronco defense got tough and forced a Panther punt from their own 3-yard line. James Maxwell fielded the punt at the Ozen 38-yard line and returned it all the way back for a Bronco score with 6:53 left in the game. But Ozen’s Mack Randall, who stands 6-8, blocked David Howard’s extra point kick in what proved to be the gamewinner for the Panthers.
Dayton then forced an Ozen punt after Maxwell’s TD to give the Broncos good field possession at their own 45-yard line. Facing a fourth-and-one at the Ozen 47-yard line, Michael Dugat was stopped short of the first down giving the Panthers the ball back.
The Broncos did get one final play at their own 20-yard line, but Sean Gilley’s Hail Mary fell incomplete and ended Dayton’s season.
Down 7-6 at halftime, Ozen marched 85 yards in 14 plays, which entailed converting on three third-down conversions. Brandon Washington capped the long, time-consuming drive by scoring from a yard out to give the Panthers their first lead of the game. Washington then added the two-point conversion run to make it 14-7 with 5:44 left in the third quarter.
It looked good for Dayton early on as a stingy defense and high-powered offense was clicking together.
After going three-and-out on their initial possession, the Broncos then took their next series and needed only three plays to cover the 42 yards as Gilley hit Andrew Thomas from 24 yards out and the first score of the game.
Ozen then took their next possession and drove all the way to the Dayton 38-yard line before Joe Carter stepped in front of an Anthony Boutte pass at the one yard line for a Bronco interception, ending the Panther scoring threat.
Starting at their own 1-yard line after the Carter interception, Dugat busted off a 70-yard run before finally being caught at the Ozen 29-yard line. Dayton could not do anything after the Dugat run though, as Gilley threw incomplete on fourth-and-five from the Panther 24-yard line.
Two series later, after a short Gilley punt, Ozen took over at the Bronco 41-yard line. Four plays later it was Boutte scoring from a yard out to cut the lead to 7-6. The extra point kick was wide left to keep Dayton ahead with 5:26 left in the first half.
Dugat rushed for a game-high 136 yards on 13 carries to lead Dayton. The Broncos finished the year at 7-3 and with a host of players coming back next season, Dayton will be looking to make a good run at 11 consecutive years at advancing to the state playoffs.
Ozen (7-3) will move on to the second round of the playoffs where they will meet the winner of today’s Marshall-Klein Oak contest next week.
