DAYTON — Nothing like an old fashioned shootout on the football field and that’s what the 6,000 fans Friday night at Bronco Stadium got to see. The good thingwas that Dayton outscored Forest Brook 47-36 on their Homecoming to remain atop of the district standings.
In a game that featured 12 touchdowns and over 800 yards of offensive, it looked a little scary early on as Dayton had to come back from a 28-14 deficit late in the second quarter.
The Broncos then used two touchdowns in a span of 27 seconds to tie things up heading into the half. Then Dayton poured it on in the second half to run away from the Jaguars.
Dayton (4-2 2-0), is in a three-way tie for the District 19-4A lead with Crosby and C.E. King, who were both victorious Friday night and also moved to 2-0 in district play.
Although the Broncos gave up nearly 400 yards of total offense to Forest Brook, the defense did cause three turnovers on the night and scored the first points of the game. Chase Fayle picked up a Jaguar fumble and returned it 40 yards for a Bronco touchdown just a minute-and-a-half into the game.
After Forest Brook scored two straight touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead, it was Michael Dugat busting loose on a 60-yard touchdown to knot things up at 14. The Jaguars then got a Brodrick Green to Dominique Henson 17-yard touchdown pass and then Henson scored from 33 yards out to give his team a 28-14 lead with 1:44 left before the half.
Dugat then scored from four yards less then a minute later to pull Dayton to within seven.
Special teams then set up the next Bronco score, as Matt Gilbert recovered a Jaguar fumble on the ensuing kickoff to set Dayton up at the Forest Brook 22-yard line. Quarterback Sean Gilley hit Andrew Thomas on a 10-yard touchdown pass with 28 seconds to go before the half to bring the Broncos back even.
Dugat then started to assert himself early in the second half by capping off the Broncos 75-yard six-play drive with a 43-yard touchdown run to give Dayton the lead at 34-28. On the drive Dugat rushed for 70-yards and was just getting started.
To the Jaguars credit they did respond to the Broncos opening drive of the third quarter by scoring on their own opening drive as Henson scored from a yard out and then added the two-point conversion run to give Forest Brook a 36-34 lead with 6:20 left in the third quarter.
Dugat then capped an 80-yard nine play drive with his fourth touchdown of the night, a four-yard run.
The junior running back who led the greater Houston area last year in rushing and scoring finished the game with a season-high 270 yards on 32 carries.
The defense then came up with another big play as Sali McNeal recovered a Forest Brook fumble at the Jaguar 38-yard line. Gilley, who passed for 128 yards through the air, then scored from eight yards out to put it out of reach. Dugat threw the key block to spring Gilley in for the score.
Dayton finished the game with 442 yards of total offense while compiling 25 first downs.
Thomas led all receivers with five catches for 65 yards while David Howard caught two passes for 41 yards.
