HOUSTON — What a way to start district 19-4A play. It was a name-your-score Friday night as the Dayton Broncos decided not to run up the score in beating Houston Smiley 62-0 at Jones Cowart Stadium.
It was 42-0 at the half and could have been a lot worse if Bronco head coach Jerry Stewart would not have called off the dogs.
Dayton (3-2 1-0), was led by quarterback Sean Gilley who was 6-for-8 passing for 150 yards and two touchdowns through the air, while scoring on both of his carries on the ground. Running back Michael Dugat rushed for 152 yards and two touchdowns in the win.
The Broncos needed only four plays to cover 51 yards in the opening two minutes of the game as Gilley scored from four yards out. The big play of the drive was a Gilley to Andrew Thomas 25-yard pass on the opening play of the game.
Less then a minute later it was the defense getting into the act, as Anthony Bailey sacked Golden Eagle quarterback Kevin Thompson for a safety and an 8-0 lead. The Broncos would score again less than two minutes later, as John Gable went in from four yards out.
Gilley would then go to the air for the next Bronco score by hitting James Maxwell from 30 yards out on a frozen rope to make it 22-0 with 4:37 still left in the first quarter. Dugat would then get into the act by scoring from seven yards out just before the end of the first quarter.
Kerwin Marshall then picked off a Thompson pass and returned it 35 yards to the Smiley 11-yard line early in the second quarter. Gilley scored from a yard out two plays later to make it 36-0 with 10:01 still left in the first half.
Dugat would then cap off a 54-yard, four-play drive midway through the second quarter by scoring from 27 yards out and a 42-0 Bronco halftime lead.
The only question in the second half was what would be the final score. A running clock and a lot of mercy by the Broncos kept it from being as bad as it could have been.
Dayton would get their longest score of the night on their next possession as Gilley hit Maxwell from 57 yards out with 5:08 left in the third quarter. Maxwell finished the night with four receptions for 109 yards and two scores.
Thomas would then tally the first of his two touchdowns by scoring from six yards out and a 56-0 lead heading into the final quarter of play.
With the second team in the game, Dayton would march 81 yards on five plays with Thomas going in from 36 yards for the final score. Joe Chapman had a couple of nice runs for the Broncos on the drive. Thomas finished the night with 73 yards on the ground while catching two passes for 41 yards.
For the game, Dayton finished with 462 yards of total offense while holding Smiley to a 14 yards rushing and 77 yards of total offense.
It will get a little tougher next week as Dayton finally gets to play a home game again after playing their last four games on the road.
The Broncos will welcome one of their 19-4A rivals in Forest Brook next Friday’s at 7 p.m. at Bronco Stadium.
