The Texas Department of Transportation will conduct a meeting to present general project information and gather public input about widening Highway 146 from Dayton to the Chambers County line.

“The public input is very important to us,” said Phillip Lujan, director of transportation, planning and development for the Beaumont district office of TxDOT.

The meeting is set for 5 to 8 p.m. July 14 in the cafeteria at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School, 309 Highway 146, in Dayton.

There will be exhibits showing the existing roadway, proposed cross-sections and project constraints. The plan includes converting the two-lane highway into four lanes, and will still provide for two directions of traffic.

Some sections of the highway may contain a grass median.

The widening project was approved in February, Lujan said, and the initial estimate for widening the 11-mile stretch is “in the ballpark of $20 million.”

“It was a project we identified based on need in that area,” Lujan said. “There is a great deal of traffic.”

An average of 11,100 vehicles travel on this section of highway in either direction each day, Lujan said.

TxDOT and consultant team members will respond to questions and comments at the meeting. TxDOT Right-of-Way Office employees will discuss procedures, benefits, programs and provide other information regarding land acquisition.

Land has not yet been acquired for the widening project, Lujan said, but a widening plan should be ready by the end of the year. Lujan said he does not know of a projected completion date.

“I don’t know that we have gotten that far,” Lujan said. “The sooner the better.”
